Siting a nest box

Siting a nest box

You could enjoy watching young birds in your garden if you simply provide somewhere secure for them to nest.

The design and siting of the boxes depends on the species you want to encourage. For example boxes for tits, sparrows or starlings should be fixed two to four metres up a tree or a wall. Owls need special boxes specific to each species.

Our church style decorative box is ideal for tits and can be hung from a tree branch using the ring provided or fixed with ties or screws. It also has a hole in the base that can be used to fit to the top of a post or pole.
Choose a sheltered spotChoose a sheltered spot
The box should be sited out of direct sun in a sheltered spot. Use any established trees or buildings to naturally shade the box during the day, or if not available face the box between north and east to avoid strong sunlight and the rain bearing south-westerly winds.

It's important that the birds have a clear flight path to and from the nest without any obstruction of the entrance. Ideally the box should lean forward slightly so that any rain will be kept clear.

Favourite species include tits, robins and wrens. Their requirements are different. Blue tits like an opening about 25mm diameter, great tits about 32mm. But wrens and robins prefer an open fronted box.

Although nesting boxes are best put up during the autumn, it's still not too late as breeding begins during March. Many birds will check out nest boxes during the autumn and winter, looking for a suitable place, but there may be last minute changes if the threat level from predators rises for example. Tits will not begin to search for nesting sites until February or March, so don't delay.
Fix carefullyFix carefully
Robins and wrens need open-fronted boxes to be low down, they nest below 2m, so need to be well hidden in dense vegetation like old ivy over fences or walls. Tits will look for something between 2-5m above ground.

If fixing your nest box to a tree avoid using nails that may damage the tree. Instead use a nylon tie or hose covered wire to tie around the trunk or branch. Make sure you check regularly to avoid the tie cutting into the growing branch over time.

Nest boxes should be cleaned thoroughly during the autumn to reduce spreading disease and parasites. No need to add nesting materials but you could leave raw sheep's wool, pet hairs and dry vegetation lying nearby to help out.

Encourage our wonderful native birds to nest in your garden. It's fun and educational as well as potentially helpful to the birds themselves.
