Gardens from seeds!
Auntie Madge TomatoAuntie Madge Tomato
Auntie Madge tomato grows well outside with minimal fuss.
Prolific producer of smallish egg shaped fruits.
Auntie Madge tomato seems quite resistant to blossom end rot and slug/snail damage - at least it was for us last year! We did suffer a bit from blight due to the heavy summer rainfall. If affected use a copper based fungicide, or avoid the problem by growing under cover.

We like to start ours in late March in a propagator. Then we grow them on in larger pots until the frosts have passed - mid May round here. Last year we put three per grow bag with support to tie them in as they grow. Pinch out side shoots - those ones that grow from the angle between branch and stem, to encourage more prolific fruiting and less leaf production.

Spray the flowers with a mist of clean water to help setting fruit and pick when ripe and warm from the sun. Great with basil and balsamic vinegar as a light lunch or starter. Happy salad days!

Achocha Seed Achocha Seed
Sowing
We have found the germination rate to be better if the seed is sown on edge.
Sow your seed mid spring in rich compost in a warm greenhouse or from April in a propagator.
Don't have these? Don't despair! A pot with a plastic bag over the top will be OK.

(tip: blow into the bag before you put it round your pot and secure with a rubber band. The carbon dioxide from your breath will help to create the right temperature and humidity - but remove it when the plant is about 1cm high).

Achocha is a rampant climber, so give it some support and it will race sky-wards. If grown in pots don't grow it next to things you may want to move later! It will curl its tendrils round them and hold fast. The fruits come after the greenish yellow flowers which form at the leaf axils. Pick the fruits when small for eating raw in salads for a crunchy fresh taste, or grow on and split in half to remove the angular woddy seeds and pulp to cook like stuffed peppers or chop and add to curries, and stews.

Squash or Pumpkin seedsSquash or Pumpkin seeds
If you have received free seeds they were open pollinated so their progeny can't be guaranteed. They are most likely to be Turk's Turban type, but could also include banana pink or golden hubbard. Whatever variety they are likely to germinate quite well and the fruits are generally good to eat fresh as summer squash or if ripened will store well into winter. We offer them here for culinary as well as decorative uses.

Sow one seed per 3" pot on edge in good compost. Sow indoors late March onwards and harden seedlings off before planting outside after the risk of frost is past. Cucurbits include squash, pumpkins, corguettes and marrows. They all like humous rich moisture retintive soil. An ideal location is a compost heap.

They will climb and scramble so give them plenty (2-3 feet between plants) of space and watch them go. Make sure they have plenty of water, and restrict the fruits to 3-4 per plant, fewer if you want woppers. Pick when the fruit is young for prolonged cropping and leave the last fruit to rien in the late summer sun to harden the skins for storing over autumn or even into winter. We usually manage to keep them for Christmas and even Easter this year!

They are great roasted. When reparing, asave some seeds for next year. Clean and dry them, then store in a paper bag or envelope clearly labled.

CosmosCosmos
If you have received free seeds from us they will give a range of blooms in the pink to purple range.

Your seeds are from Cosmos bipinnatus, or lace cosmos, familiar yellow-centred daisy flowers ranging from white to pale pink to reddish or purplish pink and have very delicate ferny foliage.
They can grow fairly tall but are nicely light in texture and won't obscure other plants too much. In ideal conditions they can reach 5' but if you don't want them that tall they also make a pretty cut flower, so won't present much of a problem.

Environmentally friendly watering tips from SandEdge! How to use water wisely...Environmentally friendly watering tips from SandEdge! How to use water wisely...
Both the squash and achocha plants need plenty of water to help swell the fruits, but you don't need to use a hosepipe to do this.
We all need to conserve water so we have put together some simple tips to help with water conservation.
  • Use "grey water" e.g. from your washing up
  • Capture rainwater in a water butt
  • Apply a good mulch to conserve ground moisture
  • Water by hand and avoid using sprinklers
  • Don't waste water on lawns in dry spells, they'll soon green up with the first rain
