Sedum Roof Mats and Green Roofing Materials

Choosing sedum matting

Choosing sedum matting

What are the benefits of using sedum matting?
It looks great and is super tough being drought resistant.
Our sedum matting is grown without pesticides.
Provides a great alternative roof covering especially for out buildings.
It reduces rainwater runoff by 25% in winter and 80% in summer.
It reduces UV damage to waterproof roof membranes doubling their life.
Sedum roofing is low maintenance requiring a light spring feed and leaf clearing in autumn.
One of the greatest benefits is insulation -
Sedum matting keeps the average temperature cooler in summer & warmer in winter.
Save on power and encourage bio-diversity with a green roof made from sedum matting.

Sedum matting technical information

Sedum matting technical information

A lightweight domestic green roof made using Enviromat sedum matting will weigh between 65Kg/m2 and 150Kg/m2 - please ensure that your building is strong enough.
If in doubt it's wise to consult an Architect or Structural Engineer, especially if the building is covered by insurance.

Ensure the structure is capable of taking live loads.
Calculations must take account of all anticipated weight loads including:
Snow
Wind
People accessing the roof for maintenance etc

Existing structures may need to be reinforced to take the extra load.
Support joists must not be too far apart otherwise deck deflection might lead to standing water on the roof.
Standing water means more weight on the roof and is likely to damage the sedum plants.
Be aware that existing metal decked roofs will deflect under the extra loading and this may cause ponding.
Building Control may need to be consulted if the new roof is on a shared boundary with a neighbouring property (fire regulations).
For green roofing projects larger than 50 square metres, please consult us for professional advice on 01638 552809.

Our sedum matting contains the following varieties :

S. album
S. kamtschaticum
S. pulchellum
S. reflexum
S. spurium
S. sexangulare
Sedum Roof Installation Advice

Sedum Roof Installation Advice

The roof deck must be smooth - the green roof build-up doesn't mould easily to bumps and bulges and it is vital that there are no air pockets underneath the sedum matting; i.e. corrugated surfaces are not suitable for this type of green roof.

Dead loads = permanent components e.g.

Waterproofing system
Drainage matting
Maximum saturated weight of Water retention blanket
Maximum saturated weight of Sedum Blanket
Fixings and edgings
All related addition system components
Live loads = additional but changeable components e.g. foot traffic during construction and maintenance
Snow

A living roof needs a minimal fall (or cross-fall) of 1 in 60 ie a 1 degree fall. see diagram.

If the roof slope is less than 3 degrees, then a layer of drainage mat needs to be incorporated into the roof build-up.
Recommended falls and drainage

Recommended falls and drainage

Roof falls and the positioning of drainage outlets needs careful thought - standing water must be avoided at all costs.
The diagram shows the problem of ponding in valley gutters.
Maximum recommended fall is 25 degrees
Irrigation is essential for falls over 10 degrees - for small areas a hose or a sprinkler is fine.
If the roof slope is over 9 degrees, we recommend using 1m x 1m slabs of Enviromat. Larger pieces will be more prone to slippage.
Avoid or re-direct water discharged from high level roof areas to prevent over saturation and substrate erosion.
Build up

Build up

The diagram shows a typical build up using barrier matting, drainage matting and water retention matting below the sedum roof mat.

Wind lift must also be prevented by a suitable edging material. For example L shaped metal or timber edging to overlap the matting, paving slabs or gravel can be effective.
