Hygge

Hygge - candlelight, cosy, comfortable

10 ways to get Hygge - It's Danish for enjoying the simple things in life.

HYGGE - (Say it like “hoogah” and start to feel cosy now!)

January is the month when we feel an all-time low; Fed up with “Brexit?” Fed up with “Trumpism”?

Christmas is long gone, waistlines likewise and this year more than ever we seem to be facing uncertainty at home and abroad.

Now more than ever it’s time to copy the Scandi style and hunker down at home. (Denmark, Norway and the Netherlands all ranked in the Top 10 for happiness last year while we in the UK managed just 23)

Think cosy, candlelight, snuggle up in your woollies.

  1. Create a hygge corner; Think cushions, blankets, low lighting and anything else that makes it snug, a space in your house that feels like the perfect little cosy nook.

  2. Surround yourself with friends and loved ones, or indulge your self with a hot bath and a choc treat.

  3. Light some candles and indulge in some simple pleasures - switch off the phone and read a book, look at your old photos, plan something for the Spring.

  4. Have a movie night - watch some old favourites. Think more "It's a Wonderful Life" than "Nightmare on Elm Street".

  5. Play a board game (Remember "Monopoly"?)

  6. Start a jigsaw.

  7. Do a crossword or get a colouring book - perfect to help you unwind away from the screen.

  8. Host an indoor picnic on the carpet in front of the fire.

  9. Enjoy a glass of wine, add a bowl of nuts or crisps to the table, and enjoy the simple pleasures of ‘Hygge’.

  10. Try a warming soup (See our Pumpkin or Squash Soup)
